Winter style hacks for looking good when it's bitterly cold outside
How to stay warm but still look stylish
Published 07 April
Those harsh Canberra winter temperatures have a knack for nipping the style inspiration right out of you. Instead of falling into the routine of reaching for whatever’s the warmest and most comfy, keep your style game in top form with these winter style hacks.
#1 Trade blacks for nudes and don’t forget to layer tones
Black is always chic, but it can also feel dark and dreary when worn all winter long. Refresh your wardrobe with a new failsafe colour palette of nudes. From light shades of beige and sand to earthy tones of taupe and camel, layering nude tones is sophisticated and effortless every day of the week.
#2 Two jackets are better than one
Double up on the warmth with two jackets. Layer a longline duster coat or cardigan under a cropped jacket - denim, leather, blazer and puffer jackets all work well here. The trick is to keep the underlayer streamlined, and for the top coat you want something with structure to keep the look smart.
#3 Make a turtleneck sexy with a slip dress
Turtlenecks are one of the warmest pieces in your winter wardrobe, but they can also come across as frumpy. That’s where one of summer’s most trendiest pieces comes in. Take your slip dress from season to season by layering it over a turtleneck (or long-sleeve knit). Opt for a slim-fitting turtleneck and make a statement with a clashing colour combination. For the office, try a shirt dress in place of a silky slip.
#4 Swap tights for knee-high boots
Tights are a great way to cover every inch of bare skin, but they don’t always add to an outfit. Read: They’re practical but not necessarily pretty. The easy fix? Long boots are trending this season and they will up your style game while keeping your legs snug.
