Aldolfo Domingez is a unisex fashion retailer at Canberra Centre, which has their own unique signature style and a big focus on sustainability. We sat down with their CEO Adriana Domingez to discover more about their brand.
What is it like working for the brand that your father created?
It’s very exciting to be a bridge between the past and the future. It’s a brand that was born at the same time as me, and completely revolutionised Spain in the 80’s, and made its mark worldwide. We now have an opportunity to make it fun and relevant again, which is what fashion is all about.
Adolfo Dominguez are incredibly environmentally conscious in the way that they create and operate as a business, how important is it to you to keep the business sustainable?
From a personal perspective, our family is mainly vegetarian and most of us live in the countryside, and have a vegetable garden. We are sensitive to animal welfare, and subscribed a manifesto back in 2010. Having said this, sustainability is evolving very rapidly in our industry and it’s a real effort to keep up. We have made progress all these years, but we are renewing and bringing new energy to our commitment, and will make it into a strategic point for us.
However, there is something that we are already doing, an have always done, which is betting on better quality clothes that can last you through the years. That to us, is sustainable.
What is the most rewarding thing about your job? The most creative thing you have done is...
I work in fashion. There is no “one thing”. We are not minimalistic with the quantity of creativity going on here! But we are a brand that likes clear lines, and refined products, so all these ideas are always distilled into perfection.
What are two of the most important lessons you have learnt in business?
Nothing is good or bad. It’s all relative to the time and place. The important thing is to understand CHANGE. That really is the only constant. I am also coming to realise that you are only as good as the members in your team. Motivating and securing talent is everything.
What advice would you give an aspiring CEO…
Once you get there, it’s a completely different ball game to what got you to the job in the first place. Which was probably excellence and commitment in some specific area. But suddenly the job becomes more abstract, strategic, people related. Basically, you are the Chief Meaning Officer.
How would you describe your personal style?
I like purity of line, quality in texture, and nuanced volume. For me, fashion is not unlike architecture.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I really enjoy not doing anything in nature, just being. I enjoy silence. I enjoy reading. And I also love a riot: singing, dancing, playing the piano. I like a lot of things.
The one must-have piece from Adolfo Dominguez is…
I think anything with a crinkled fabric. We’ve been making wrinkled jackets for men, and amazing asymmetrical tops and dresses for women since the 80’s. They are totally iconic for us. It’s our heritage. It’s what makes us different.
