In between the bathbomb-making and makeup-sampling and gin-tasting of last weekend's Beauty Precinct birthday celebration we picked up a few valuable lessons about face care and revealing your inner radiance.
If the crowds at Jurlique told us anything it’s that facial essences and mists are the way forward. Last weekend was the perfect time to restock on the bestselling Rosewater Balancing Mist, what with this being one of the rare times of year that it is available in 200ml format. This heavenly scented toning mist incorporates the essence of thousands of Australian-grown rose petals to hit your skin with anti-inflammatory hydration immediately after cleansing, or to combat a powdery finish at the end of your makeup routine. After discovering the Activating Water Essence inside Jurlique’s free-with-purchase Glow Starter Kit we’ll also be adding this as a pre-serum step in winter for plumper, younger-looking skin. To reinforce our newfound love of essence, celebrity makeup artist Chantelle Baker revealed in her sold-out masterclass that she’s partial to Chantecaille’s vitamin C-loaded Vital Essence for the face and eyes (available at Mecca Cosmetica).
During our free 15-minute skin consultation at Endota Spa we learned that Canberra’s cold and dry air, coupled with those extra-hot showers we’ve been taking and all the coffee we’ve been drinking instead of plain old water, has wreaked havoc on our skin. No surprise then that the go-to treatment of the weekend was the Intense New Age Facial, which factors in LED therapy to supercharge cell renewal and can be followed up at home with the New Age Collagen Power Boost Serum for optimum elasticity. The revelation that all Canberrans could do with some skin renewal had us rushing for the sheet mask shelf at Seoulflower, where we also happened to uncover the K-Beauty equivalent of Estée Lauder’s iconic Advanced Night Repair serum in Missha’s Time Revolution Night Repair Ampoule.
If you ventured into L’Occitane over the weekend you likely had to duck and weave between the bottles of Shea Face Comforting Oil flying off the shelves because of a half-price promotion on the ultra-fine organic wonder product. Rich in vitamins A, C and E, this non-pore-clogging oil is a popular extension of the shea butter range that works well for those who suffer with cold weather or retinol-induced flakiness but don’t enjoy the heaviness of a body butter. Simply mix a couple of drops into your day cream for a boost of Cleopatra-like radiance. Of course, we already knew that L’Occitane’s signature Shea Butter Hand Cream is a must for the desk drawer in winter, that or Crabtree & Evelyn's shea-featuring Gardeners Hand Recovery.
After our complimentary hand massage at Perfect Potion we got to talking about the powers of essential oils to help relax the mind as well as reinvigorate the skin. Let’s face it, the dark circles and dull complexion associated with sleep deprivation must be avoided at all costs. In particular we discovered that camomile, petitgrain, clary sage and lavender oils (all found in Perfect Potion’s Sweet Dreams Blend) can induce a similar reaction in your neuroceptors as that associated with anti-anxiety medication. Though using the aromatherapy diffuser blend itself is going to have the most benefit, it’s easy to experiment with these Australian-sourced oils via the Sweet Dreams Balm or Pillow Mist. You’ll also find calming lavender, together with frankincense, in the brand’s scar-fading Skin Elixir.
After Chantelle Baker’s masterclass we headed straight for the Nars Sheer Glow Foundation rack in Mecca Maxima safe in the knowledge that, should the perfect shade not exist, it is easy enough to blend your own. Also into the basket went a Smashbox Buildable Cheek Brush for layering different blushers, and an Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette containing enough warm-toned eyeshadow options to easily transition from day to night. While touring the testers in Myer, we were also reminded that few dew-ifying cosmetics can compete with Benefit’s High Beam Liquid Highlighter for ease of blending over powder. To take the dewy face trend to the next step, and because Chantelle says lip gloss is back in a big way, we picked up a tube of Chanel Gloss Volume at David Jones too.
