Canberra-based session stylist Alan White has styled hair for some of the world’s top magazines, fashion brands and movie stars. Here, he shares his winter haircare secrets.
1. Break the cycle of over-washing. Though it can be tempting to shampoo daily, this can lead to dryness, unwanted static and dull, limp locks – particularly if your products aren’t working for you. Extend the time between washes to allow natural oils produced by your scalp to rehydrate and nourish your hair. Though you may experience oiliness when you first take a break, you’ll definitely see (and feel) the difference if you can stick with it for a few weeks.
2. Use cleansing hair products that are designed to lock in moisture and create shine, softness and lustre. The best shampoos work to rebuild and refresh the hair while leaving you with that elusive ‘second-day hair’ feeling. [Winter is the ideal] time to focus on rebuilding and strengthening hair, while perfecting your haircare routine.
3. If your hair is naturally dry and frizzy, avoid leaving home with wet hair – this will only encourage the frizz as hair soaks up extra moisture particles from the outside air. You should also invest in a quality hair masque and use it at least weekly.
