With two weeks of lively Chinese New Year celebrations ahead, there’s little reason to be bored in Canberra this month. From festive foodie spreads to orchestral music and lantern making, getting into the spirit is as easy as indulging in your twentieth dumpling.

1. Chinese New Year Concert

The prestigious Chinese Orchestra of China National Opera and Dance Drama Theatre is heading down under for a special Chinese New Year tour. Audiences will be treated to a musical journey led by traditional Chinese instruments and a modern orchestra.

2. National Multicultural Festival – Chinese New Year Showcase

The annual National Multicultural Festival is back with an overflowing calendar of live music, food stalls and cultural celebrations from around the world. The Chinese New Year showcase on 18 February will feature singing groups, opera and folk dances from various Chinese provinces. Be sure to catch TV chef and cookbook author Poh Ling Yeow on 17 February when she presents a series of free cooking demonstrations. She will also be signing copies of her latest book, Poh Bakes 100 Greats.

3. Banquet at CBD Dumpling House

4. Chinese Lantern Festival

Watch the edge of Lake Burley Griffin glow red with a lantern parade for the Chinese Lantern Festival. Kids and adults are invited to join in on the festival, which marks the end of this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations. Bring your own lantern or buy one at the festival. The Australian China Friendship Society will also hold its lantern making workshop in the week before the festival.
